Re-Animator (1985)
Re-Animator, based off of HPL's Herbert West - Re-Animator, doesn't stick close to the plot of the short story, but does deliver the same main ideas behind it. A young medical protege, Herbert West, has developed a serum, which when used after death may "re-animate" the body. However, it's not quite perfected as we see throughout the movie. West enrolls as a student at Miskatonic University Hospital after his former teacher's, Dr. Gruber, gruesome death. West soon challenges the resident brain surgeon extrodinaire, Dr. Carl Hill, and they soon become bitter enemies. West takes up with another medical student, Dan Cain, and after killing and re-animating his cat, Cain joins forces with West in his search for life after death. After attempting to re-animate corpses from the hospital's morgue, West and Cain manage to get the Dean of the school killed. Dr. Hill confronts West, and after being be-headed, West decides what the hell...re-animate him too. Although Hill has plans to use the serum in conjunction with a new laser labotomy technique to create a army of undead followers. Very twisted guy. The movie ends, ripe for a sequel which, we later have as "Bride of Re-Animator". This movie was produced by Brian Yuzna, who later went on to work with Gordon on another splatterfest movie, "From Beyond". Other producing credits include "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" (which would've been interesting if it was a splatterfest) and "Necronomicon". Superb acting by both Jeffrey Combs and David Hale (even though half of it for David is as a disembodied head).
