In The Mouth of Madness
Directed by John Carpenter. Starring Sam Neill, Jurgen Pronchnow, Julie Carmen, Charleton Heston, David Warner.

Well, I finally got around to getting screenshots and soundbites for this overtly Lovecraftian film from venerable horror director John Carpenter.  The plot deals with a missing horror author Sutter Cane.  His publishers have hired an insurance investigator, John Trent (Sam Neill) to look into his disappearnce and pair him with Cane's editor. Slowly, Trent realizes things are not always as they seem and that he has stumbled into Cane's world.  Somehow, what he is writing, is manifesting itself in the physical world.  Trent soon comes to find the true meaning of madness.
I have had a love-hate relationship with this film ever since it was put out.  I always liked the effort put into the film, but hated elements of the final product.  Carpenter just can't seem to get away from some of his standard horror fair.  Such as the zombie like Policeman, John encounters in the ally...and the motley zombie crew who do the axing to some poor sod.  Or the guy on the bicycle...still not sure what significance that played.  There were just so many things that he could have done away with to make this such a more coherent film.  Now don't get me wrong.  This film has some really outstanding momments that I still, to this this day, say are some of the best renderings of mythos elements.  I loved the changling oil painting in the Pickman House Bed and Breakfast, as well as the final dealings with Sutter Cane and the rising of the Old Ones.  Very keen animatronic job.

madness1.wav  Trent reads from one of Cains earlier works...which oddly mirrors the look of the town they are in.

madness2.wav  Cane's publisher, Harglow, confronts Trent when he tries to convince him not to release the book.

 madness3.wav  "...I'm not crazy".
