The Music of Erich Zann
Another fine adaptation of a Lovecraft short story, and guess what folks...yep, it wasn't produced out of Hollywood. Go figure. This movie comes from director John Strysik, who has worked on many other projects, including directing a few episodes of the old Monsters series that has been a long time in sydication. What's John's formula for a good film?...keeping it short, sweet, and simple. This is an interesting short to adapt to film, since it centers around a hauntingly and quite uneartly soniscape of violin music. Something which was hard enough to imagine through Lovecraft's writing, but to realize it to a film score? Well, the original compositions written and performed by Andre' Caporaso are eerie and melodious. They really set the stage for fleshing out the atmosphere. And the optical effects by John Smiley end the movie on a very interesting note. The acting is fair, with not much dialogue except what's needed to advance the plot. Overall, a very pleasing film to watch, and again it serves as an example to Hollywood that Lovecraft can be done, and can be done seriously.
