Cthulhu Mansion I was overjoyed
to finally get my grubby little hands on this film and about
the only thing I can say about it after a viewing is that I was
even more overjoyed to see the end credits finally roll.
This campy 90's horror flick which claims to be "influenced
by H. P. Lovecraft" is laughable and quite lacking in anything
really terrifying other than the acting and special effects.
It is, in fact, loosely Lovecraftian...moreso in premise than
actually dealing with anything actually written of by HPL.
The whole story revolves around a group of young "hooligans"
who make away with a stash of cocaine after a drug deal gone
bad at a carnival. While trying to get out one of them gets shot
by a rent-a-cop and they in turn beat him almost to death leading
to the police stopping cars and blocking streets. They
make their escape by holding Chandu, an aging illusionist,
his daughter and hired hand hostage. Knowing they can't
get by the roadblocks they head for Chadu's mansion to hold up
and to work on their shot comrade. This is were things
get good...or bad, depending on how you look at the film.
Chadu and his mansion hold a dark secret. Chandu had gotten
hold of a certain book with the word "Cthulhu" in bold
across the front. He had been toying around with it during
his magic acts and in doing so, released a terrible evil that's
been calling his basement home for quite some time. But
now since there's some company in the house, it decides to make
an appearance. One by one, these poor sods get whats coming to
them. The tease for this movie says and I quote, "...the
terror escalates to a frenzied pitch until the survivors are
left begging - not for their lives - but for their deaths!"
Hmm...I was wishing just for the movie to end mostly.
cthulhumansion1.wav Chandu's spiel during one of his acts. cthulhumansion2.wav Chandu recites a bit from his 'Cthulhu' book. Not a good idea. cthulhumansion3.wav An example of the fine acting abilities. cthulhumansion5.wav The basement holds a dark secret behind a locked doorway. cthulhumansion6.wav "...Why the hell would I make up shit like this?!" cthulhumansion7.wav More of that great dialogue. cthulhumansion8.wav Chandu learns that his fate
had been sealed the momment he read from that book.
