Alien (1979)
Directed by Ridley Scott. Starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skeritt, Ian Holm, Yaphet Kotto, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt.

In deep space, the crew of the mining ship Nostromo are awakened by the ships computer to respond to an automated distress signal. The ship has adjusted course to rendevouz with the signal, much to the dismay of the crew. After landing on a barren planet, Warrant Officer Ripley works to decipher the transmission and discovers that the signal is actually a warning, not an SOS. But it is too late to turn back as three members of the crew have already left to investigate the derelict ship. The terror begins when Kane encounters a nest of eggs inside the alien ship. An organism from inside an egg leaps out and attaches itself to his face, causing him to fall into a coma. Because of the facehugger's self-defenses (acid blood and a tail constricting Kane's neck), the crew of the Nostromo cannot remove it without also killing Kane.
As the crew searches for a way to save Kane, the facehugger dies and Kane wakes up, feeling fine. He is brought out of isolation and the crew soon makes another horrifying discovery - the lifeform they've found breeds within a human host. The facehugger deposited some kind of embryo inside of Kane. During his first dinner after this ordeal, Kane begins convulsing and heaving uncontrollably. The crew struggle to hold him down, and suddenly, the young alien bursts out of his chest and scuttles off and hides in the Nostromo where it continues to develop. As the crew attempts to hunt it down, it in turn hunts them. While searching for a safe escape, Ripley discovers the Company's secret plans to bring the alien to Earth and that Ash, the Nostromo's Science Officer, is willing to kill his fellow crewmates to achieve this goal. Things turn grim, and the alien manages to dispatch the whole crew, save Ripley, who sets the ship to self destruct thinking this the only means to kill the alien. She espaces just in time on the lifepod, Narcissus...only to discover, the alien has boarded it along with her. She eventually blasts it out into space through the airlock.
What a horrific roller coaster ride this movie is! It starts off slow, but once they bring Kane back aboard ship...things really get creepy. The alien design work done by H.R. Geiger is outstanding. He puts his familiar biomechanic style into the alien design, which works to terrifying effect. This movie truly scared the bejesus out of me. The atmosphere, the pacing, the cinematography and direction, the sets and setpieces and the characters all are the finest examples of great filmmaking and a great screenplay! The atmosphere in this film is as close to cosmic horror I can think of. An alien being that has no feelings for humanity, no remorse, no emotions...just a drive to survive, at any cost.
